Outdoor Activity and Social Media Intern
About the placement/internship

Why did you decide to do a placement/internship?

I decided to this internship as a chance to get some experience working within social media marketing. As I was coming to the end of my History degree, I began thinking about life after University and what I wanted to pursue. After looking on Career Connect, I saw the opening for this internship which offered me the chance to help market a new activity for the centre. I was intrigued by this idea and knew it would be a good way to see if marketing was something I wanted to pursue in the long term.

How did you find your placement/internship?

Career Connect

Application process

Applying for this internship was a smooth process. I applied through Career Connect and had no difficulties. I submitted a document on why I wanted the position through the website and was invited for an interview at the Centre. The process was stress free and the information provided on Career Connect ensured I knew how to apply.

What made you choose this organisation for your placement/internship?

Whiteley Woods Outdoor Activity Centre is a fantastic organisation which does so much for the community. They offer young people a place to have fun and develop as individuals. I knew that completing an internship here would be a fulfilling experience where I could not only develop professionally, but personally and in line with my values.

Main responsibilities

My main responsibilities included developing a new activity for the site, social media posts and email marketing. Developing a new activity for the site was something exciting to me and pushed me out of my comfort zone. I had to explore various options and think creatively, but also realistically about what activity I could suggest that would improve Whiteley Wood's existing activity options. After conducting research on trends in the outdoor activity and sporting market, I created and presented a pitch for the activity of Frisbee Golf. The presentation was well received and I was given permission to begin planning and implementing the activity. Using the budget, equipment was bought and I created maps and instructions for print for the site. The activity was tested and well received and will be introduced to Centre.

Alongside the planning, marketing and introduction of a new activity, I was able to create and post social media content across Whiteley Wood's social media platforms. I was able to optimise and drive engagement with their platforms through strategic and engaging posts.

Lastly, I completed 3 email marketing campaigns for Whiteley Woods OAC. Using Mail Chimp, I sent out newsletters for their visitors and helped to increase engagement with their marketing campaigns.

Typical day

A typical day consisted of visiting the site in person and speaking with my employers about the work I had completed and what I could do next. When at the Centre, I was able to discuss any ideas for content, marketing and activities.

What did I enjoy about my placement/internship?

The internship was truly a fantastic experience. One aspect I really enjoyed was being able to speak to both the visitors and volunteers at the centre. Talking with these people was vital in ensuring I was successful in my internship, as I had to make sure that any of my ideas would be well received by the Centre and visitors. All the people I met were amazing and so helpful and they really helped my personal development. Not only did I enjoy meeting new people, but it definitely improved my ability to confidently engage with a wide range of people and how to communicate my ideas confidently.

Challenging aspects

None to note.

Did you use any skills learned from your course?

Through my History degree, I learnt how to conduct research more effectively. A history degree requires students to read a lot of material. This can be daunting however throughout my three years, I was able to improve my ability to pick out key information and summarise large amounts of text. I used this skill throughout this internship. I researched and generated reports on trends in outdoor activities, social media marketing trends and SEO. Having developed my research skills throughout History, I was able to transfer this skill to a new discipline effectively and it helped me to create work which impressed my employers.

Has your time on placement influenced your future career choice?

My internship demonstrated and reinforced my passion for marketing and media and I am now about to start a permanent role with a Digital Marketing company.

As a result of your placement/internship, what are your next steps in planning what you want to do after graduation?

I have secured a job that I'm very excited to start!
