About the placement/internship

Why did you decide to do a placement/internship?

I was interested in museums and archives and I looked forward to pursuing a career in archives and records management after graduation. I had never worked in archives outside Hong Kong, so the internship was a challenging and exciting opportunity for me to gain working experience in the UK.

How did you find your placement/internship?

Career Connect

Application process

I submitted the online application and attended an interview.

Main responsibilities

I was responsible for cataloguing and digitising archival photographs.

Typical day

In the morning I stayed in the reading room or office and worked on the cataloguing. In the afternoon, together with my supervisor, I stayed in the digitisation studio and digitised the catalogued photographs.

What did I enjoy about my placement/internship?

I enjoyed working in the archive and talked to the archivists and librarians there. I observed how they worked and I received advice about my career after graduation. I enjoyed looking at the photographs, especially the photographs of the lovely guide dogs.

Challenging aspects

As I was not familiar with British politics and politicians, identifying people and places within the photographs could be challenging.

Did you use any skills learned from your course?

I have learned the basic archival principles and skills in one of my modules and the internship allowed me to apply and practice the archival skills I had learned in class.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Don't worry even you don't have any background knowledge about the internship or discipline because you can always learn them during the internship.
