About the placement/internship

Why did you decide to do a placement/internship?

I decided to apply for an OnCampUS placement to increase my employability and gain new skills to further my future career.

How did you find your placement/internship?

Career Connect

Main responsibilities

The role of a research assistant is varied, with a broad range of responsibility in multiple areas. This included background reading, producing a research questionnaire, sharing the questionnaire with interested parties, analysing the results and producing a report.

Typical day

There was no typical day in my role. It varied on the stage of the research project.

What did I enjoy about my placement/internship?

I enjoyed working with a range of professionals on research that had a tangible impact on people's lives.

Challenging aspects

Making contact with organisations I had no pre-existing links with.

Has your time on placement influenced your future career choice?

Without a doubt. Moving forward, I am even more determined to have a future career in disability studies, disability-related research or with disabled people in academia. I am also interested in working in medical research, something I had not previously considered.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Work hard, listen to your colleagues and don't be afraid to ask questions. We are privileged to work alongside leading researchers and it would be foolish not to use their insight.
