I was a publicity officer in my committee this year which really piqued my interest in using social media as a primary marketing device. As a journalism student, the world of Public Relations has also always been within my peripheral vision and I was excited to explore it as a potential career option while still in university.

My main responsibilities were to compare the current social media platforms of the School of Education, against the standards set by other departments and other universities. With that I had to develop a social media strategy and management plan that could be used over the next academic year. I also had to run the day to day platforms by putting up appropriate posts. During my internship, I also helped in producing and editing video content for the department for use on social media.
I did my internship remotely so I would start off my day by doing some research on the social media of other departments and universities and then adding it to my research. I would then go look through the social media feeds to see if there was anything worth posting or retweeting. I would have meetings with members of the department once a week to let them know of my progress. During the later stages, I would contact students from the department regarding the video project we were producing and then editing the videos.
Because of the flexibility of working hours, it can be difficult to follow a strict working pattern especially when you're managing university submissions at the same time.
I am definitely more interested in considering social media marketing as a potential career option.
