About the placement/internship

Why did you decide to do a placement/internship?

I decided to do a placement for the following reasons: Firstly to broaden my horizons within the engineering field. Secondly, I felt it was highly necessary for me to gain experience from a placement in order to enhance my CV which may help me with future job applications. I also undertook my placement abroad which aided me in terms of international networking.

What made you choose this organisation for your placement/internship?

A highly credible organisation which was formed in 2010 by young professionals with a drive towards perfection in the diverse field of industrial solutions. The organisation is a fairly new one which has no ceiling in terms of future growth.

Main responsibilities

Carrying out analysis for ways in which the company could improve its services.

Typical day

The supervisor would assign me with work papers and research to carry out about the company in which I would either present, write a report or we would have detailed discussions. I learnt about the range of chemicals supplied by the company as well as the different aspects of wastewater management and chemical cleaning. I also completed two courses which were chemical handling awareness and H2S awareness & escape.

What did I enjoy about my placement/internship?

Experiencing a different culture as well as networking and meeting people within the chemical, oil & gas industries.

Did you use any skills learned from your course?

I used a range of skills learnt from my course they particularly included presenting, analytical thinking and organisation.

Has your time on placement influenced your future career choice?

Overall my time on placement has strengthened my ambition to work within the chemical engineering sector whereas prior to my placement I was contemplating working within different engineering sectors.

As a result of your placement/internship, what are your next steps in planning what you want to do after graduation?

Gain experience within the engineering field in order to apply for a job overseas.

My piece of advice to students

Don't be anxious or afraid to leave your comfort zone, highlight your interests from an early stage in your time at university and put your all into pursuing them.
