About the placement/internship

Why did you decide to do a placement/internship?

I wanted to do a PREP to increase my knowledge regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) within creative projects. My research centres around immersive art (virtual, augmented and mixed reality) and AI is increasingly becoming an important factor within this area.

How did you find your placement/internship?

Through family or friends

Application process

I was emailed in a message to all PGR students informing us that PREP funding was available. PREP funding had been mentioned at our intro sessions last year so I already had an idea in mind that I hoped would be successful, which was useful given the quick turnaround time. The online application process very straight forward and easy to complete.

What made you choose this organisation for your placement/internship?

I chose the organisation as they have an excellent international reputation and produce stunning work which includes multiple innovative uses of AI. They also have a very open and friendly approach and an accessible studio culture which I felt confident I could contribute to.

Main responsibilities

I worked directly with the Creative Director, suggesting examples for creative inspiration and research, and discussing possible R&D pathways to further enhance the company's activities.

Typical day

During my time with the company I worked on and off-site. Much of my time was spent discussing how the company use AI within their projects. I also visited exhibitions with the Creative Director to research how AI is being used creatively by other international practitioners.

What did I enjoy about my placement/internship?

I enjoyed stepping outside of my usual routine and learning something unique and new. I really enjoyed seeing AI in action at Manchester International Festival. The insights I gained from the PREP will really help further my research and, hopefully, my future academic and/or professional work.

Challenging aspects

Working to another organisation's time and pace.

Did you use any skills learned from your course?

My research and extensive reading around the subject of immersive technology was absolutely invaluable in helping me to contribute to the company's knowledge and giving me a platform to learn more about the creative use of AI from them.

Has your time on placement influenced your future career choice?

I have already worked within the creative industries but the insights I gained on placement will help me to incorporate new technology elements into my future work.

As a result of your placement/internship, what are your next steps in planning what you want to do after graduation?

After finishing my PhD I hope to continue working within the creative industries and the knowledge I gained on the PREP will help me strengthen my research and creative practice.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Make sure that the organisation is a good fit for your current skill set and an opportunity to learn or improve your knowledge in new areas. Make the most of your time and don't be afraid to ask questions!
