Law/Criminology Internal Research Communications
About the placement/internship

Why did you decide to do a placement/internship?

To expand my knowledge of working within research communications and add to my graphic design portfolio.

How did you find your placement/internship?

Department email

Application process

I submitted an application by email before attending a short interview.

Main responsibilities

Producing layouts and graphics for use in internal communications, e.g. posters, leaflets and worksheets for postgraduate students.

Typical day

On a typical day I would continue work on a large format poster, send emails requesting artwork from books authored by academics from the School of Law, and liaise with other staff on their needs for future work.

What did I enjoy about my placement/internship?

It involved a lot of creativity in terms of creating assets and designing material around the amount of copy I was given. Designing a template for research briefings was also an interesting task given the need to create not just attractive assets, but adaptable ones too.

Challenging aspects

Obtaining artwork from publishers could be difficult and time consuming.

Has your time on placement influenced your future career choice?

While I already knew I wanted to work in graphic design, this placement has provided valuable experience and knowledge for pursuing more work in the university sector.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Don't be afraid to ask what is needed from you and to make any requests for needs you have - people are accommodating and happy to help.
