Why did you decide to do a placement/internship?

I found the following opportunity as a perfect fit for my academic background that would let to further develop scientific writing, literature search and review skills at the same time enjoying the topic and earning extra cash.

Application process

I sent an email to the line manager of the project including my CV and cover letter. Within a few days, I received an invitation for an interview.

Main responsibilities

Throughout the project, I have been given a number of tasks. Mainly I would do literature search, review and scientific writing on the Internet of Things in Healthcare. At the same time, I would have weekly meetings with my supervisors and other academics working in this area to further expand my awareness and stay up to date with IoT innovations. Also, I have been given a number of smart devices (Arduino microcontroller, raspberry pi computer, samsung smartthings etc) to model potential assistive device for patients with dementia.

Typical day

On a typical day, I would spend a few hours doing literature search and review. Then, would try to implement my own ideas using open source devices at the Home Lab (very interesting lab that simulates the home environment with new gadgets and technologies that could be observed and evaluated by researchers)

What did I enjoy about my placement/internship?

I really enjoyed the independence and the ability to manage my own tasks and time. My supervisors, as well as people at the office, would be very helpful and would give a hand any time.

Did you use any skills learned from your course?

I have developed literature review, search and scientific writing skills that I find extremely important in the future academic work

Has your time on placement influenced your future career choice?

Indeed it has! The placement encouraged me to study towards the career in academia.
