Telephony Data Audit
About the placement/internship

Why did you decide to do a placement/internship?

I wanted to add some extra value to my degree by undertaking possibly a technical role and most importantly to fund my trip to Europe!

How did you find your placement/internship?

Career Connect

Application process

It was a really smooth application process. The On CampUS are advertised at career connect. I applied to the ones I was interested in and ended up securing one with CiCS after an interview their team.

Main responsibilities

My main responsibility was to carry out audit existing of Telephony data across the communication, voice mail and call logger systems. The data mainly consisted of name, surnames and department names associated with each extension numbers. My role was to identify the discrepancies between these fields, segregate data with respect to departments, and contact the corresponding telephone liaison officers (TLOs) to retrieve correct information. Some coding and scripting was also involved to make the process faster.

Typical day

My typical day consisted of sifting through the data and thinking of possible ways to automate tasks through some coding on MATLAB. The data basically present in .txt . xlsx .csv files and I used the MATLAB features to read, write and compare the data within these files. Also, I was in touch with TLOs of different departments to get things rectified, so there was a lot of e-mail communication going on as well.

What did I enjoy about my placement/internship?

The most enjoyable part was problem solving and automating the audit process.

Challenging aspects

The challenging aspect was dealing with huge amount of telephony data. Thorough analysis of the data was necessary to form solid coding logic to meet the requirements.
