My main responsibilities include conducting interviews with undergraduate and postgraduate students; filming those interviews; and editing the filmed content to be put on the department website.
A typical day would involve getting equipment, deciding on filming location then setting up all the equipment at the location. I would then start the interview and as soon as it finishes I would start editing the content which can take a variation of times depending on the video.
I really enjoyed getting to know the interviewees before the interview in addition the creative element that the role has with regard to editing the content.
The challenging aspect was the decision of the location and the setting up since I relied of natural light for filming as the main source of lighting however getting a balance of not too strongly lit rooms and locations not ones that are dim was quite challenging. Similarly, finding locations that were quite and looked pleasant was a challenge since the filming was happening around the busy times for students.
In one of my course modules we were offered with a workshop from the creative media which had tips and information about editing, filming and production in general. Those skills were really helpful in this placement.
Being on this placement has influenced my career choices slightly where I started to possible consider having a videography element in my area of interest which is childhood education.
