Cataloguer (New Birds' Eggs Donations)
About the placement/internship

Why did you decide to do a placement/internship?

Mainly to make a bit of money, I was in my final year and needed financial support for life after graduation.

How did you find your placement/internship?

Career Connect

Main responsibilities

Creating a database and catalogue of the eggs by photographing the collections and entering information where given and performing maintenance on the collection e.g. cleaning out boxes, transferring eggs to new boxes and swapping to acid-free padding.

Typical day

As above. A typical day would involve photography and maintenance in the lab and/or database and catalogue work on the computer back home.

What did I enjoy about my placement/internship?

The eggs (I'm a bird enthusiast), the variation in tasks (kept it interesting) and the people (everyone was friendly and approachable)

Challenging aspects

The repetitive nature of some of the tasks got a bit tedious at times. Sometimes there were logistical issues to overcome, which was a fun kind of challenging.

Did you use any skills learned from your course?

None from my course

Has your time on placement influenced your future career choice?

Not really, but if I saw an advertisement for part time or temporary curatorial work I would probably apply for it now that I've completed this placement

Advice to students
