About the placement/internship

Why did you decide to do a placement/internship?

I wanted to do spend my summer doing something beneficial, visiting Bali is the furthest i have ever travelled on my own and the whole experience was something I will definitely remember.

How did you find your placement/internship?

Organisation website

Application process

Applying to PMGY is fairly easy, there is an application form for all of the different projects they run in various different location s. After choosing the one that you feel most suits you, there is an application where you allow them some information about yourself and pick the dates you would like to arrive.

Main responsibilities

I was on a childcare project, we worked with the younger children mostly 6 months - 5 years and aided in the cleaning, clothing, washing, feeding and play times with the children.

Typical day

Mornings were usually early starts because of the local culture, there are lots of prayers that can be heard from 6am, we would then have breakfast and move into the childcare projects. We would usually play or teach the children in the morning as well as changing and feeding them around lunchtime. After the children went home we had evenings to ourselves, these were usually filled with enjoying the local town and culture or venturing off into tourist towns.

What did I enjoy about my placement/internship?

I loved the children as well as all of the girls I met who were also volunteering, they made it almost as worthwhile as the kids. I have so many friends that I can go and visit all around the UK and the world now that shared the same experience I did.

Challenging aspects

I really struggled adjusting to the food. Travellers are known to experience 'Bali belly' which can make you quite ill for some extended period of time, being ill away from home isn't really enjoyable.

Did you use any skills learned from your course?

I'm not sure specifically which skills used but the transferable nature of English Literature really aided me in the planning of any teaching elements and allowed me to work in an effective way to help the children as best I could over a short period of time.
