Summer Intern
About the placement/internship

Why did you decide to do a placement/internship?

Doing things beyond your course that enhance your CV can really only be a good thing. Internships abroad have the potential to increase your international exposure and professional network in addition to the fantastic working experience!

How did you find your placement/internship?

Speculative application

Main responsibilities

I was responsible for investigating current and future engineering requirements and projects at the company shipping terminals in South Korea. Part of my role was also to give presentations on my work and lead some workshops on UK culture and industry.

Typical day

Between my base in Seoul and fieldwork in Yeosu (in the south of the country) my experience was very different. Working hours were more shift orientated for the fieldwork, starting at 7am and running until 4 or 5. I was involved in site visits, project updates and also created new documentation and resources for the company.

Often, part of the day would involve meeting people from partner organisations and understanding how they fit into the overall picture.

What did I enjoy about my placement/internship?

The opportunity to meet people from many different backgrounds and industries. The opportunity to try many new foods and travel a good chunk of Asia was also a huge bonus! Always make the most of where you are.

Challenging aspects

Communicating the specific engineering requirements or details of a project was difficult when people did not speak a high standard of English. I also had to travel a lot and move between different companies and projects so keeping track of this was also challenging.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Make the most of the opportunity and do not be afraid to ask questions to people at all levels of the company. An internship is as much an opportunity for you to learn as it is for your host company to learn about themselves.

Pack a toothbrush in your hand luggage to be prepared for long flight delays!
