About the placement/internship

Why did you decide to do a placement/internship?

After hearing about the placement at the careers fair I signed up to the email list. I completed one teaching placement in Solihull and decided I would like to explore teaching further in a more challenging and exciting setting such as China.

How did you find your placement/internship?

University careers fair

Main responsibilities

Working on a summer camp in Yangshuo teaching English to Chinese middle school children between the ages 6 and 15.

Typical day

The morning started with three hours of English lessons, which are independently planned. Typical lessons were teaching the kids of lower ability how to say their name, colours, animals and school subjects. The higher ability classes were taught to discuss more complex subjects such as climate change, differences between England and China and future careers. The afternoon and evenings were spent either taking the children to local tourist attractions, meeting and talking to tourists or craft activities.

Challenging aspects

Learning disabilities and mental health problems are not as widely recognised among school children in China as well as they are in England, and therefore this caused a few minor behavioural issues. The language barrier was also an obvious issue at times but easily overcome.

Has your time on placement influenced your future career choice?

Yes, after completing the placement I decided I would like to teach further in either Beijing or South Korea, for at least a year, after completing my degree.
