To improve my knowledge (chemistry) skills and to experience professional chemistry research to decide my carrier.
Department email
I emailed many doctors and professors in the department then I had meeting with several academics to discuss about the placement and interests.
I chose my research topics and I carried all researches by myself. There were no time management of the research and office time but I had to take all responsibility of the research.
Most of the day I went to the office 9 am in the morning and start the calculations of the research. Every day at 10:15 am and 3:00 am we had the tea time (break time) and every Tuesday 10:15 am we had physical chemists meeting to talk and discuss about department things and new discovery of chemistry.
I mostly enjoyed most of the times because the internship is about research my own topics for the first time in my lifetime. I felt like I achieved my ultimate dream to be a chemist. Also, when I have problems with my research PhD student and Anthony (Dr. Meijer) were always kind to help me.
Take all of the responsibility of my own research was hard. Time manage meant of the research was challenging because generally calculations of the chemical module often takes 1-2 weeks. Hence, organising the result value of the calculations was very challenge because throughout the research I did hundreds of the calculations which at least 300 - 400s values. I had to study by myself to learn about research topics even I have not studied in the lecture or the knowledges will not on the lectures. That was most excited part of the research at the same time one of the hardest part of the research.
I improved researching the right literature for the research topics and bring all different chemical knowledge what I have learned in the lectures into the topics.
Yes definitely! I dropped previous National University in Korea to study chemistry in The University of Sheffield. Hence, I always want to be a scientist to find new knowledge. However, this internship research project gave me a clear vision of my life. I clearly decide to be a chemist.
It was great opportunity and I really appreciate to the great University. I feel like I owe something to the University. Thank you for all the knowledge.
