About the placement/internship

Why did you decide to do a placement/internship?

It's important to gain experience; part of my degree requires an industrial placement.

How did you find your placement/internship?

Speculative application

Main responsibilities

To conduct experiments which contribute to specific projects I was involved in.

Typical day

Due to confidentiality I cannot disclose full details of what I did; briefly I performed experiments, data analysis, along with presentations and project meetings.

What did I enjoy about my placement/internship?

I was given a hands-on role and trusted to make critical decisions based on my knowledge. The respect and professionalism was incredible and allowed me to feel a sense of ownership for my work.

Challenging aspects

I entered a department of Oral Healthcare; something I had previously very little knowledge of was biology and microbiology, I learnt a lot about this and eventually it helped to contextualise my experience at Philips and helped to see the bigger picture of the project I was working on.

Did you use any skills learned from your course?

Yes, part of my time there I had to do some rapid prototyping, I used some knowledge of CAD which I gained from my degree to create 3D designs for rapid prototyping.

Has your time on placement influenced your future career choice?

Yes, i hadn't previously considered a role in Research, however I would now consider it as a viable future prospect as I thoroughly enjoyed my time on placement.
