Master Student Intern
About the placement/internship

Why did you decide to do a placement/internship?

To gain work experience in industry over a long period before graduating and to try to understand better what I would like to do as a graduate

How did you find your placement/internship?

University contact within the company

Application process

I had to send my CV and cover letter and then have two Skype interviews.

Main responsibilities

Putting together a report on a new medical device in which the company is interested and try to come up with new ideas for patent filing.

Typical day

A typical day would involve doing a lot of reading around the topic of this type of medical device and the healthcare domains that are related to it, have meetings with clinical experts in these domains, write up the report, and possibly slides for presenting a new idea for an invention.

What did I enjoy about my placement/internship?

The very creative and friendly environment, and seeing how motivated my supervisors were.

Challenging aspects

Having to do things that I might have not being taught in university.

Did you use any skills learned from your course?

I mostly used skills that involved summarising, organising and presenting.

Has your time on placement influenced your future career choice?

Yes, I now know that I would most likely like to do a PhD in industry.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Keep networking during the year, that's the best way of finding contacts useful to get a placement.
