About the placement/internship

Why did you decide to do a placement/internship?

I decided to do this placement because I was really interested in understanding more about the ways in which institutions acquire funding. I also have a keen interest in learning how to obtain grants for research projects since I hope do future research on how non-communicable diseases are affecting Caribbean countries.

How did you find your placement/internship?

Career Connect

Application process

After seeing the job posting on Career Connect, I submitted my CV and covering letter to the email address given. Almost immediately my submission was acknowledged and I was told to await further correspondence. About a week later I was contacted to come in for an interview during which I was asked a number of questions relating to my previous work experience and what I hoped to get out of the job placement. Later that evening I was offered the position.

Main responsibilities

My main responsibilities included:

- Identifying the US-based charitable trusts and foundations currently supporting other selected universities over the last 3 years.

- Creating a short summary for each including their grant making activities to UK universities, with details of what the grant was awarded for, amount, recipient etc.

Typical day

Every morning I would get in and check my emails to make sure I hadn't received any new instructions from my supervisor. I would then make a list of tasks to be completed that day and proceed to work my way through.

Daily I would try to do research on 3-4 Trusts/Foundations and complete at least one briefing document. Throughout the day I would liaise with my supervisors, giving them up dates on progress and altering tasks if necessary.

What did I enjoy about my placement/internship?

I really enjoyed my interaction with my supervisors (Lynn & Louise). Also this was the first time I worked in an "open office" setting, which allowed me to interact with other members and staff and I really felt like I was part of the team.

Did you use any skills learned from your course?

While I didn't utilize any skills i gained from my EPH course, I did get an opportunity to improve my report writing and research skills
